ETTAMIANO Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOP

TASTING NOTES: An intense red colour with scarlet highlights. On the nose it is rich with a great intensity of fruit: bottled fruits and jams; lightly toasted and with hints of vanilla and chocolate. Ripe and soft in the mouth with the tannins perfectly in balance with the fruit and a long finish showing touches of almond and hazelnut. A complex and serious wine with a great depth and elegance.

HISTORICAL AND TECHNICAL NOTES

Sometimes an error can lead to an unplanned success... the name “Ettamiano” derives from a written mistake made by a town Clerk in 1876 when recording the name of Angelo Maci’s grandfather who was the founder of a family of passionate winemakers and growers… an amusing anecdote which adds to the legend behind the wine. The Ancient Primitivo grape takes its name from the early ripening habit and probably came from the Dalmatian region.

It was certainly known in Puglia by the 17th Century having been planted by the Benedictine monks. The bunches of grapes are loosely arranged but the berries themselves are very rich in sugars. The harvest is done by hand into cases to preserve the structure of the grapes; the vineyards are wonderfully sited with views over the blue Ionian Sea.

The resultant wine is then aged for 9 months in American oak barrels to soften the tannins and add a toasty elegance. The microclimate of the Taranto region gives it a warm, consistent and sturdy structure which is typical of the best wines of Southern Italy.
